Submitted for OST Composing Jam: Crunchtime 03, Hosted by Lone Rabbit.
I wanted this dragon to be more like a deity. Since the jam was asking for a melody, I went for a melody I had sitting around in my collection of things I record from my improvisations on the lyre.
I used two instruments and my voice for the entirety of the instrumentation. The lyre is the plucked instrument you hear (I built it myself!), and is also in the album art behind the dragon. For the very low sound, I actually throat sang in the Kargyraa style, which produces a growling tone that is an octave below the voice. . At the end, I also did Sygyt, which is where the whistling comes from. Because I love Mongolian music, and this theme is East Asian, I thought it was an ideal track to use throat singing on.
Mongolian throat singing has a very airy sound to it as well, which is perfect for a dragon of the sky. The deep Kargyraa has a might to its sound, and the Sygyt's airiness was perfect for a dragon of the sky. A being of light, fearsome to behold, yet radiating otherworldly glory and majesty that renders one unable to look away.
I feel particularly happy about the last portion of it, though I am pleased with how the whole track turned out. The 3 against 4 at the end just came out of me and I love how it twists and winds like a dragon, like I can see the dragon flying through its own serpentine path, where two melodies are happening at the same time, and yet are harmonious, like the elegance of a swirling dragon.
